Are humanoid robots autonomous or remote controlled?

Both, in layers. In 2026 walking, balance and navigation on a humanoid robot are autonomous: the robot keeps itself upright and follows a route without anyone steering. Hand tasks are a different story. Many demos are teleoperated by a person in a headset, and the first home robots ship with remote operators who step in when the robot is stuck. The 1X NEO, priced at $20,000, is explicit that remote assistance happens only with the owner's approval. Tesla's 2024 Optimus event drew criticism precisely because its bartending robots were revealed to be human-controlled. The useful question is not "is it autonomous" but "which parts, and who says so."

What is the difference between autonomous, teleoperated and remote-assisted?

Three modes cover almost every humanoid you will see.

Autonomous. The robot decides and acts from its own sensors and models. Balance and locomotion on a Unitree G1 are autonomous: push it and it recovers on its own. Navigation on a mapped floor is autonomous. Tote handling by Agility Digit at GXO is autonomous within its defined task.

Teleoperated. A person controls the robot's arms and hands in real time, usually through a VR headset and hand trackers, with the robot copying their movements. This is how most impressive manipulation footage is made and how factories teach robots new tasks. Mercedes-Benz describes exactly this for Apptronik Apollo at its Berlin campus: employees transfer process knowledge through teleoperation and augmented reality.

Remote-assisted. The robot runs autonomously most of the time and calls a human operator when it fails. The 1X NEO uses this model for home chores. 1X states that NEO is never teleoperated without owner approval, that its cameras blur people, and that owners can block rooms from its view.

The lines blur because every teleoperated session generates training data that makes the next version more autonomous. Teleoperation is not a trick; it is how the industry builds autonomy. The problem is only when it is undisclosed.

Why was the Tesla Optimus demo controversial?

At Tesla's "We, Robot" event in October 2024, Optimus units served drinks and chatted with guests. It later emerged that the robots were being controlled by human operators, which the presentation had not made clear, and the backlash was sharp. Robotics researcher Filip Piekniewski called the project a scam, and Rodney Brooks, a co-founder of iRobot, said in December 2025 that the vision of humanoid home assistants was fantasy thinking. Tesla has since said Optimus will be used inside its own factories first, with external sales later and no published date.

The episode set the standard the whole category is now judged by: a demo is trusted only if the maker states what was autonomous. The Unitree G1 dance routine at the 2026 Spring Festival Gala was choreographed and autonomous in execution; the makers said so and the robots performed the same routine dozens of times.

How can you tell if a humanoid demo is teleoperated?

Signs that a person is driving the hands:

  • A hidden operator's hands. Movement is fluid and human-like on a task the robot has never been shown doing, with no pauses to "think."
  • No repeat. One perfect take, no second run, no failure footage.
  • Latency tells. A short delay between a command and the action, or a robot that hesitates in ways that match a person adjusting a headset.
  • No named customer. Autonomous work in production comes with operating hours and part counts; BMW published them for Figure, GXO for Digit.

Signs that it is autonomous: the maker says so on the page, the same task is shown repeatedly with variation, and a customer has published numbers. Bain noted in 2025 that many demos use staged environments or undisclosed remote supervision. We compared the disclosures for the five robots named on this page: 1X states its remote-assist policy for NEO in plain terms, Mercedes-Benz states it for Apollo's training, and for the rest we rely on customer-published numbers rather than launch footage. Does it matter for you as an owner?

It matters in three ways.

What the robot does when you are not watching. A remote-assisted home robot means a person may, with your consent, see your kitchen through its cameras. Read the maker's policy before you buy. We cover this in Are humanoid robots safe to have at home?.

What the robot can do at all. An autonomous G1 walks, dances, greets and carries small objects. If your plan needs it to fold laundry, you need either a teleoperator on your payroll or a remote-assisted robot whose maker offers that service. What you can charge for. The businesses earning from humanoids in 2026 charge for what is autonomous and reliable: performance, presence, greeting. Event companies quote $500 an hour with a technician standing by, which is a form of remote assistance with the operator in the room.

FAQ

Q: Is the Tesla Optimus autonomous? Partly. Tesla has demonstrated autonomous walking and factory tasks, but its October 2024 public demo was human-controlled without saying so. Tesla has published neither a consumer version nor a sales date.

Q: Is the 1X NEO teleoperated? It is remote-assisted. NEO works autonomously and a 1X operator can step in through its cameras, only with the owner's approval, with people blurred and rooms excludable.

Q: Can a humanoid robot walk on its own? Yes. Balance, walking and push recovery are autonomous on every serious humanoid, including the $13,500 Unitree G1.

Q: Why do companies teleoperate robots at all? To teach them. Every teleoperated session records data used to train autonomous skills. Mercedes-Benz and Apptronik describe this openly for Apollo.

Q: How do I know if a robot demo is real? Look for a maker statement on autonomy, repeated takes with variation, and a named customer with published operating hours. Without those, treat it as a claim.
